I know how hard the winters are - I was on the coast in Izumo (literal translation - land of the many folded clouds). Once it was winter, we didn't see the sun until April. I remember clearly the first sunny day of 'spring' during my second year and heading to the coast with a friend.
It will get better. Use your kotatsu!
